Virtuosic Piano Meets Leaders of History

Celebrated pianist Sonya Lifschitz weaves together a musical exploration of over a century’s worth of history, art, and politics in Stalin’s Piano.

Stalin’s Piano, which premiered at the 2017 Canberra International Music Festival, is a multimedia composition by Robert Davidson that mixes music with audio and video recordings of famous artists and political figures. The work includes multiple well-known figures such as Le Corbusier, Jackson Pollock, Ai Wei Wei, and Donald Trump.

Robert Davidson is celebrated for his ability to discover the musicality of speech and create a dialogue between speech and instrument, while Sonya Lifschitz has been praised by the New York Times and The Age as “dynamic” and “powerful” and is internationally recognised as one of Australia’s most innovative and creative musical voices.
