Here In The Pitch – Jessica Pratt

Here In The Pitch, singer-songwriter Jessica Pratt’s fourth studio album—in the best way possible—sounds like a relic from a bygone era. With Pratt’s distinct mid-century vocals, dulcet acoustic guitar and a lo-fi production reminiscent of the Beach Boys, the album’s retro vision is clear. As is the case with all bringers of nostalgia, the warmth and comfort of Here In The Pitch is often tinged with a subtle sense of wistfulness. Perhaps that is the bittersweet feeling Pratt was going for. In the closing lines of the album’s final track, her voice filled with quiet yearning, Pratt sings: And wouldn’t you say the past’s no longer quite /
As near as you’d like, and it’s gonna hurt you now? / ‘Cause I’m exactly what you said, the tears have all been shed / Can’t watch the headlights from my bed / The chapter’s at an end, and I’ll be holding tight
.

Dawn Is A Melody – Finn Rees

Hailing from Melbourne’s bustling jazz scene, Keyboardist, DJ and producer extraordinaire Fin Rees presents us with his stunning debut album, Dawn Is A Melody. The album can be best described as sounding exactly like how it looks—warm, meandering and lush. Heavy on piano, brass, guitar and a rich tapestry of analogue sounds, Dawn is A Melody shows us that music can be beautiful and compelling without being needlessly experimental or novel. Rees knows this all too well. Through 10 soul-stirring songs, he gently reminds us that the tender familiarity of a sunrise is enough to move and touch our hearts.
