In December 1914 Sir Ernest Shackleton set out on a journey to cross the Antarctic from coast to coast. The ill-fated expedition came into trouble when their ship Endurance became trapped in ice. It wasn’t until August 1916 that the entire crew was rescued and returned to safety.
Now a virtual reality exhibition recreates their journey at the Australian Museum. The creator of this immersive experience, Tim Jarvis, chats to Arts Wednesday about the recreation of the last journey of the Heroic Age of Antarctic Exploration.
Thin Ice VR runs until 13 October.
James Elazzi is an exciting new playwright whose works deal with issues of identity. Whether it be age, race or sexuality he finds and explores conflict in these areas of our lives.
His latest play, Karim, is set on the rural outskirts of New South Wales. Karim’s life takes an unexpected turn when he discovers an oud and realises that this may be the key to a new destiny. The oud is an Arabic lute that dates back to the 11th century and is an integral element of classical Arab music and culture.
Andrew Cutcliffe, one of the performers joins us to discuss the play and the themes explored.
Karim opens at the Riverside Theatre in Parramatta on July 25 and runs until 3 August
