The Wrong Gods: Tradition, Power and the Price of Progress

April 30, 2025

What if even Gods themselves are losing control? What happens when power, belief, and identity collide in a world that no longer plays by the rules of the divine?

The Wrong Gods is the latest production at Belvoir – where beliefs are wavering, identities explode and moral benchmarks blur in a society close to collapse. The Wrong Gods is a gripping, thought-provoking play that dives deep into the chaos of modern myths and shaken faith. This play challenges everything we thought we knew about justice, loyalty, and who gets to decide what’s right. An audacious work of art of pure tension, this play will takes you on a whirlwind of doubts and disturbing truths.

This May, Belvoir Theatre presents The Wrong Gods, a new work from the acclaimed playwright S.Shakthidharan, the award-winning creator of Counting and Cracking and The Jungle and the Sea. Running from 3 May to 1 June, this play unfolds on the banks of a sacred river in India, where a mother and daughter find themselves at the crossroads of tradition and change. Nirmala, rooted in the ways of her ancestors, faces off against her daughter Isha’s yearning for a future shaped by education and opportunity. When outsiders arrive, bringing promises of progress and prosperity, the family-and their entire community-must confront the true cost of ambition, modernity, and self-determination.
