Allysha Joy has been making a name for herself over the last few years. Alongside Horatio Luna, Ziggy Zeitgeist and the rest of her incredibly talented 30/70 family, their music has taken them around Australia, through Europe and even further through the waves of the internet, emphasised further by the backing of London-based label Rhythm Section.
But Acadie : Raw, the debut solo album from 30/70’s leading lady, showcases the musical mastery of Allysha Joy to the fullest.
10 tracks of soulful, jazz-tinged and often hip hop/r&b-influenced compositions, combined with Allysha’s signature husky yet powerful vocals; all of these elements cradle not only stories of love, but stories of self-empowerment, finding the truth, acknowledging your privilege, connection to nature and being conscious of others in every context.
I spoke with Allysha Joy prior to her pending return to Europe and prior to 30/70’s support slot for the incredible Kamaal Williams at his Oxford Art Factory show in November.
We spoke about her inspirations, being “hounded to create a radio edit” for her single ‘Know Your Power’, her love of Georgia Anne Muldrow and just how hopeful she is for the future in the wake of current social climate.
Acadie : Raw is out now via Gondwana Records / Good Manners
