She Kills Monsters

She Kills Monsters is a play originally created by Qui Nguyen which debuted at The Flea Theatre in New York City in 2011. Since then the show has been performed by universities and colleges across the world and is now being performed by Epiphany Arts theatre company at Sydney Fringe Festival.

The show itself follows Agnes Evans who, after her sister Tilly’s death, falls into her sister’s world of Dungeons and Dragons in an attempt to learn about Tilly’s life and interests. The story is incredibly camp, humorous, ironic and a perfect fit for Sydney Fringe.

Epiphany Arts Performance

The production at Eternity Playhouse was put together by director/producer Annie Macarthur and choreographer/co-director Anna Jaques, while the cast was constructed from Epiphany Art’s cohort of talented young actors.

Despite the minimal staging the performance was full of engaging fight scenes and entertaining choreographed sequences to iconic pop anthems. The Dungeons and Dragons world felt vibrant and perfectly nerdy providing a great contrast to the ‘real world’ scenes.

There was considerable talent from the entire cast with multiple stand out performances. Holly Gallagher made Agnes Evans a relatable and convincing character who was easy to root for. Similarly Ruby Elane as Tilly Evans showcased her talent making the emotional depth of the character feel natural and compelling.

From the supporting cast, Jake Nelson as Narrator/Orcus was comically expressive and left a positive impact on every scene the character was included in. While Stephanie Calia as Vera was wonderfully charismatic, giving a dynamic performance as Agnes’s best friend and as a charming stand alone character.

Despite some technical difficulties throughout the performance, each cast member handled the mic issues with professionalism and at no point did it takeaway from the brilliance of the overall show. Each of these young artist’s character performances and renditions of the show’s original songs was fantastic. It is obvious that they all have brilliant careers ahead of them within the arts.

She Kills Monsters is showing from Wednesday 23rd-Saturday 26th September every evening from 6pm at Eternity Playhouse, and is a great way to support young upcoming talent.
