Scott Rathman (aka Rusted Tin) is an Arrernte artist from east of Alice Springs now based in Semaphore, South Australia. He creates colourful murals in schools all around Australia, and has realised his dream of painting a mural on the Bondi Sea Wall. His work features his signature tag, “Make Kindness the Norm”, and signifies people being united through love and kindness. His technique utilises aerosol cans as they have a large bright colour palette with the bonus of drying quickly in his outdoor work.
Festival Director, Bronwyn Kidd, comes in to talk us through this year’s Flickerfest which is about to open at the Bondi Pavilion. (19-28 January) The festival includes curated programs of short films for kids, comedy, relationships and Indigenous filmmakers. It is unique in Australia in that winners can qualify for an American Academy Award, plus there will be over 100 premieres.
There are significant prizes up for grabs including best animation, documentary, comedy, best film under 18 and best LBGTQI+ short film, and of course the always popular Audience Choice Award.
Following the Bondi season, Flickerfest hits the road for a massive 8-month tour, reaching metro and regional venues across all states.
Also we meet co-writer, director and performer Javaad Alipoor, whose play Things Hidden Since the Foundation of the World is about to open at the Sydney Festival. It is described as a multi-media murder mystery. Fereydoun Farrokhzad is an Iranian sex symbol and chart-topping pop singer who is living in political exile in Germany, though still performing to sold-out audiences in Europe. Then he is discovered brutally murdered. Beneath the who-done-it, the play investigates the internet and media as a contested space within which none of us a truly safe. 19-21 January at the Sydney Opera House.
