Landing Points: Race, Place and Identity
My guest interviews today are with Dr Hayley Megan French, co-curator of the exhibition “Landing Points: Race, Place and Identity”, which is currently on show at Penrith Regional Gallery, along with Tracey Moffatt’s seminal 1997 photographic series “Up in the Sky”, through to the 4 March.
“Up in the Sky” is usually read as black and white film stills, set in an iconic outback Australian landscape. The scenes are peopled, but the narrative is not clear, provoking questions concerning personal, cultural and political histories, most obviously Australian, but with global relevance.
“The eleven artists in the exhibition Landing Points look to Moffatt’s work as a starting point in consideration of the last 20 years of race, place and identity in Australia, and respond to the cultural complexities layered in the Australian landscape and our relation to it through new works in a range of media, including painting, performance, photography, film and installation.”
The artists: Tim Johnson, Jason Wing, Alana Hunt, Caroline Garcia, Victoria Garcia, Carla Liesch, Nicole Monks with Luke Butterly, Mark Shorter, Cigdem Aydemir, Hayley Megan French and Joan Ross.
And the music? In keeping with the tenor of the show the playlist features contrasting musical imagery about place, including a large Australian core from the eighties through to contemporary exponents.
