Intake & internship

April 30, 2026

My name is Kieran Dayman and i am an intern at 89.7 Eastside FM, I am here today to write about my experience with the station so far.

Stepping into the world of jazz radio has been a completely different rhythm to anything I’ve done before — and that’s exactly what is going to make it so rewarding.

From day one, I’ve been surrounded by music that tells stories in a way I’m only just beginning to understand and appreciate. Jazz isn’t just a genre, it’s a conversation — between instruments, between artists, and now, between me and the audience. Learning how to program a show, build a vibe, and respect the flow of a set has been one of the biggest things I am keen for so far.

I’ve also realised how important it is to really listen. Not just hearing a track, but understanding why it works, how it feels, and where it belongs. There’s an art to blending sounds, especially when you’re trying to bridge styles and eras, and it’s something I’m getting better at and would like to continue to learn every day.

even with my short experience. I have been shown how powerful radio still is. The ability to introduce someone to a sound they’ve never heard before, or to make them feel something through music alone — that’s something special.

Still learning, still growing, but loving every second of it so far.
