About me
Hi there, my name is Caitlin Ong and I’m 15 years old – year 10, attending James Ruse Agricultural High School. I’m undertaking a week of work experience here at Eastside radio station and I’m very much looking forward to it. I love music – music is my whole world. It brings me and my family and friends together; not only do I enjoy listening to music but I also love playing it.
I play the piano and the violin classically, and I also sing recreationally.
I was also featured on the ABC iView show – “The Piano Season 2” which features pianists with emotional stories about how the piano has impacted their lives (I am featured on episodes 4 and 6, the Piano s2 on ABC iView). In my case, I teach my little brother and pass on my knowledge, whilst also playing songs that he enjoys for fun.

I also love performing both the piano and violin for others to enjoy my music. In my free time, I composing music, reading, drawing and playing hockey. I also love to teach my brothers music or play for them.
My Music Taste
I listen to quite a range of genres, from classical music to R&B and pop.
I generally love to listen to whatever I play – I love to listen to and play Romantic works by the likes of Tchaikovsky, Schumann and Mendelssohn (Variations sérieuses, Op. 54 is beautiful not to mention his songs without words). I also enjoy 20th century/impressionist works – Ravel’s Jeux D’eau and Debussy’s Suite Bergamasque are extremely wonderful with delicate tones and whimsical atmospheres. I also regularly go to the Sydney Opera house to watch performances by solo musicians and the SSO (Sydney Symphony Orchestra).

Apart from classical music, I love listening to SZA, Doechii, Tyler the Creator, Doja Cat, Guy Sebastian (went to his 100 times around the sun tour this year), and Delta Goodrem. Delta Goodrem has been a big inspiration to me, she plays the piano and sings wonderfully with such passion. One of my brother’s favourite songs is “Shut Up and Dance With Me” by Walk the Moon, and he has now become my favourite song. I play it on the piano while singing whilst he dances around the room singing along.

Why Eastside Radio?
Eastside Radio was my choice for work experience week as I often listen to classical and jazz radio shows, and wanted to get a better feel and experience in the music industry. I’m eager to get to know my way around the workplace, and learn how to operate the necessary equipment. I also think it’s important to spend my time during work experience doing something that I enjoy, and what better way to do that than to spend it surrounded by music? Eastside Radio is greatly accessible and available to the public and its music and experiences that it shares connects the public, and music is all about connection.
I am excited to get to know the behind the scenes that goes on behind the radio, and the source of joy for many people across Sydney and Australia. I hope I get as much out of this experience as it will give to me, and I know I will greatly cherish my week here.
