Bobby Hutcherson 1941-2016 R.I.P.

August 19, 2016

Bobby Hutcherson, player of the vibraphone and marimba, passed away during the week. His music is loved by all and he will be sorely missed. His family seems to have been musically well-connected; his older brother hung with Dexter Gordon and his sister introduced him to Eric Dolphy. His earliest musical associations were with personnel on the Pacific Jazz label: Gerald Wilson’s big band, Curtis Amy, Les McCann, etc.

He then came to Blue Note label with a fully-formed conception and would go on to record with all of the leading lights of the new music including but not only Jackie McLean, Grachan Moncur III, Eric Dolphy, Grant Green, Lee Morgan, Andrew Hill, Freddie Hubbard, Tony Williams. A virtual ‘who’s who’ of the then current jazz.

I will be presenting his music chronologically. The program will not get out of the 1960s! If you subsequentally want to hear more, please phone or send me an email freedomjazzdance@eastsidefm.org
