Arts Friday 28 July 2017 – with Bronwyn Rennex

July 28, 2017

Today on the show I will be speaking about art the who, why, where and what of archives.

I have two guests. Firstly I will be speaking to Gael Newton, former Senior Curator of Photography at the National Gallery of Australia and now a freelance Curatorial Consultant and Researcher, whose speciality is photography in the Asia Pacific Region. You can find out more about Gael and her work on her website

https://photo-web.com.au/gn/about-gael-newton/

Later in the show I will be speaking to Steven Miller from the Edmund and Joanna Capon Reseach Library at the Art Gallery of New South Wales about the wonderful archive they have there, which includes material from artists, commercial galleries and the Art Gallery of NSW operations going back to the foundation of the gallery.

I also mention the story of John Maloof who discovered a huge pile of unprocessed film and negatives taken by a woman called Vivan Maier  in an auction house.

Maier was working as a nanny in the 60s and taking photos as a hobby…or passion. Her work is now well known internationally, thanks to John’s accidental discovery.

And also in the arts news this week, the controversy around Justine Varga’s selection as winner of the Olive Cotton Portrait Prize. Many people think a portrait of someone needs to include their face. Varga’s work challenges this assumption.
