Review by Léane Debize
Last night, I was lucky to witness Upside Down Fantasyland, Troy Rogers is a performer, comedian, poet and singer. Through his awesome One Man Show, he shares his story of trauma, parental abuse, living with his grandmother, substance abuses, and resilience.
A beautiful storytelling of emotions, vulnerability, honesty and love. This is how I would describe this show.
Troy tells his story chronologically, starting from his early childhood when he lived with his parents going through abuse. Later on, Troy and his brother moved in with their grandmother “Nan” as he calls her. He shares his personal struggle with substance abuse, violence and grief.
Through laughter, songs, and emotional poetry, Troy shares his life with vulnerability and love.
He gives a message of hope and resilience, despite everything, he choose to love his parents, because “without them I would not be here” he said. His parents are the products of trauma, trauma he chooses to break, to be a better person, to love better, for his Nan, his siblings, his mentors and loved ones and most of all for himself.
His show was a beautiful reminder that we never know what people are going through, to be patient, kind, loving and open to others and their struggles because we are all going through something.
You can attend Upside Down Fantasyland this Friday, September 26th at 7:30PM at Marrickville Town Hall. Don’t miss out on this amazing opportunity.
