Tuesday Drive Blog

October 28, 2016

And yet again we have blasted past another Tuesday Drive! We laughed, we cried, and we listened to a ten minutes live Muddy Waters song. What an afternoon.

In a great start, we had the former premier of NSW Bob Carr on the show to talk with David about the state of politics in the US, and some predictions about what the future may bring. Bob is a Professor of International Relations at UTS, as well as being a former Foreign Secretary for Australia.

In an often harrowing interview, the troubles of the future are laid bare, despite a probable Clinton victory; the awakening of a powerful new demographic, a skewed congress and an uncertain world makes America’s future a fascinating discussion.

Check it out in the podcast below.

We then had an extended Rock ‘N’ Roll heaven, exploring the legacy of Chess Records, a Chicago recording company that pushed the cream of the African-American blues all over the world. The company was started by two Polish brothers, Leonard and Phil Chess (born Lejzor and Fiszel Czyz) who moved to American in the 1920s. They were not music men but businessmen, and were able to pick the emerging but as yet unrecognized talents of the Chicago music scene. The first album they ever released was ‘My foolish heart’ by Gene Ammons, and was followed quickly by artists such as; Muddy Waters, Ike Turner, Willie Dixon, Chuck Berry and Aretha Franklin.

Phil Chess died this week, and to celebrate his achievements David played an extra long segment that exhibited the talents of the artists that Chess Records signed. It is great fun, with some really classic Blues music, which you can listen to on Eastside FM!

In the second and last interview, we had Matthew Evans on the show to talk to us about ethical farming. The former food critic turned Gourmet Farmer who has had several shows on the SBS focusing on his efforts to manage his farm (Fat Pig) in Tasmania.

He has recently created a series called ‘For The Love Of Meat’ alongside a book of the same name, that is currently running on the SBS. It is a look at the production of meat in Australia by a meat lover, for other meat lovers. Matt doesn’t try to convert his audience into vegetarianism, but does show how the raising and slaughter of animals have moved away from an “Old McDonald’s Farm” approach, into a highly efficient, industrialized business; perhaps at the cost of ethics, taste, and health.
