Another Tuesday, another awesome Drive session.
We started with a somber tone (after some technical mishaps) on a discussion about the recent report by Amnesty International that has put the issues surrounding our treatment of refugees back into the public sphere. David talked with the Australian Refugee Coordinator Dr Graham Thom about some of the harrowing experiences of refugees on the island, as well as the Nauran and Australian Governments’ responses to the report. In what turned out to be an amazing live studio interview, we had Si Mullumby, Chris Tamwoy, and Stephanie Cranford come on the show to talk their gig at The Opera House on Wednesday evening (which, as is pointed out in the interview itself, happens to be “a big gig”).
Si Mullumby is the lead didgeridoo player of Wild Marmalade, which is an Australian band with a truly unique sound. They’ve constructed a talent for live, loosely improvised music by playing their own stalls at music festivals.
Opening for Si is Chris Tamwoy, a guitar player from The Torres Strait who really takes playing music to the next level. In the video below, you can see both Chris and Si playing their musical instruments. Although we at Eastside will always sing lyrical the advantages of audio, the video does a great job of showcasing these musicians talents.

The concert was organized with the help of Stephanie Cranford, who is the owner of a musical venue called OneSpace who helped to drive the Wednesday show at The Opera House and is responsible for exhibiting much of the alternative talent in Australian music.
We thank them so much for coming on the show, and it is my understanding that they thoroughly blasted the roof off on Wednesday.
