Tradition with a twist

Belinda Von Mengerson

Belinda Von Mengerson

Arts Thursday 15 December 2016.

Meet Dr Belinda Von Mengerson, the Curator of Slipstitch, a new exhibition at Mosman Art Gallery. This is the first contemporary embroidery exhibition to be held in 3 decades.

Belinda spoke to Maisy Stapleton about how embroidery has been turned on its head and taken up by a young generation of artists, who tell stories and address issues through stitching. While some of the techniques employed might be centuries old, the narratives, fabrics and materials of contemporary embroidery have been updated to support the possibilities of contemporary art practice.

If you would like to hear the whole program, including an interview with Annette Blinco about setting the Christmas table, go to http://eastsidefm.org/arts/artsthursday/ and click on the date 15 December 2016.

Join Maisy Stapleton fortnightly from 10:30 to noon on Arts Thursday for conversations with leaders in the arts and regular coverage of Sydney’s exciting arts events.
