The first AMP building at Circular Quay was designed by Graham Thorp, of Peddle Thorp and Walker and opened by the Prime Minister Sir Robert Menzies in 1962. The first building to breach the statutory 150-foot height limit, it was elegant, self-possessed and remarkably prescient, being cooled by seawater. Now it has been fully, glamorously refurbished. Former Assistant NSW Government Architect ANDREW ANDERSONS knew and admired Graham Thorp, later became a partner in Peddle Thorp and Walker and is a walking encyclopaedia on all things Sydney. Andrew joins Elizabeth Farrelly this week on The Sydneyist to discuss the building, its significance in marking Sydney’s coming of age and its recent refurbishment.
