Get ready, music lovers! One of Sydney’s most beloved niche film events is back. Groovescooter’s 5th annual STROBE Music Film Festival kicks off Friday, August 29 at the Golden Age Cinema, showcasing a stunning lineup of music documentaries and retrospectives that celebrate iconic, unsung, and genre-defining artists from across the globe.

This year’s program features a powerful selection of films, many having their Australian premieres exclusively at Golden Age, giving Sydney audiences a rare first look.
Among the standout titles are Goddess of Slide, which traces the overlooked legacy of pioneering guitarist and vocalist Ellen McIlwaine; Big Mama Thornton: I Can’t Be Anyone But Me, an overdue tribute to the blues legend and original voice behind “Hound Dog”; Whoopee Blues, which dives into the story of the Conway Brothers and their impact on traditional blues; and Oscar Peterson: Black & White, an intimate portrait of the jazz piano giant whose talent and tenacity made him one of the greatest to ever do it.

Beyond these four gems, the full STROBE lineup features even more standout films — from underground icons to global sounds. Whether you’re into blues, jazz, punk, or world music, there’s something here to discover!
