Elvis: A Musical Revolution @ State Theatre 10 September 2023

Last Thursday evening I had the opportunity to go to Elvis the Musical. Since I am a big musical lover, this was amazing! When I was younger, I attended a number of musicals back home in the Netherlands. I have been to Disney classics such as Tarzan, The Lion King, Beauty and the Beast. But I have also been to musicals such as The Sound of Music and The Bodyguard. Musicals always bring me much pleasure. I always feel very happy when I attend a musical because of all the dancing, singing, and cheerful people on stage. That was certainly no different this time.
When I walked into the State Theatre, I was surprised by the beautiful large building and the atmosphere it brought with it.
From the moment the curtain rises, the audience is transported back in time to the 1950s, when Elvis burst onto the music scene with his unique blend of blues, gospel and rockabilly. The set design and costumes perfectly capture the era’s aesthetic, creating a nostalgic atmosphere that instantly immerses the audience in the world of Elvis. Young Elvis was seen with his mother and father and the story was told of how he got his music taste. From there you, as a spectator, are taken on his journey to become the Elvis Presley.
The supporting cast also deserves praise for their exceptional performances. Elvis’s relationships with key figures in his life, such as his manager Colonel Tom Parker and his wife Priscilla, are explored in depth. The chemistry among the cast members adds depth to these characters and allows the audience to connect with them on a personal level. The choreography in the musical is a highlight of the production. The dancing and singing of the cast are energetic and visually stunning.
There was also a 20-minute intermission during the show. When I went outside I couldn’t believe my eyes. Elvis Presley was standing in front of me, so I had to take a photo with him. As you can see, Elvis’ pride radiates from within.
The show continued and was of course filled with Elvis’ most famous songs. I think it’s so amazing and special how talented these people are because what really struck me is that, in addition to dancing and singing, the cast was also excellent at performing the Southern accent. I forgot for a second that I was in Australia.
Overall, “Elvis: The Musical” was a must-see for fans of the King and anyone who appreciates the history of rock ‘n’ roll. It’s a high-energy, nostalgia-inducing extravaganza that pays a fitting tribute to the enduring legacy of Elvis Presley. With a stellar cast, exceptional musical performances, and dazzling choreography, this musical is a rock ‘n’ roll spectacle that will leave you all shook up and wanting to return for an encore.
