Ready for Work Experience at Eastside Radio – Will H.B.

November 17, 2025
The First Day of Work Experience for Will – An Interesting Experience

Hello world! My name is Will, and I am a Year 10 student currently attending the wonderful Kirrawee High School in the Sutherland Shire. My hobbies are quite vast and relatively obscure in terms of subject and course matter, but they give me a great sense of joy. These hobbies include music making, music producing, drawing, writing, viewing geographical maps, learning world history and of course, listening to music for long periods of time. My favourite bands are the Beach Boys, Geese, The Rolling Stones and Pink Floyd (I really enjoy the Syd Barrett era above all).

My family is quite the curious bunch; my mother (who formerly worked for SBS, Paramount, Nickelodeon and so much more) working in government, specifically the Australian Digital Health Agency, and my father working an array of former and current jobs in the air travel industry from being a pilot and ambulance worker for the Royal Flying Doctor Service to working for private jet charter companies in Bankstown and Sydney. I also have two brothers, one full and one half. My half brother is a geophysicist whom works for mining companies looking at rocks basically, while my other brother currently works for NSW Education doing precurement for primary schools and high schools alike.

Why have I chosen Eastside Radio?

I chose to do my week of Work Experience at Eastside Radio because I am deeply interested in learning how radio and music listening media in general works. Eastside Radio specifically having a huge pool of people with niche tastes and wide listening experiences, which I completely fit right into. I also enjoy, heavily for some reason, looking at the electronics of how these stations work, so much so, for Year 11 I have chosen VET Entertainment as a subject to do exactly this for 2 whole years!

I also plan on entering this industry, plus the music industry, when I’m older, and I feel like learning these skills will be incredibly valuable to what I want to do in my life.

My music taste

Despite from the bands previously mentioned, my music taste is very wide and expansive. I would say my favourite song of all time is “God Only Knows” by the Beach Boys and my favourite genre to be garage rock, specifically garage rock revival with bands such as the Strokes and the Vines.

However, my music knowledge runs deep. Very deep. I have an extensive musical knowledge of specific countries ranging from the big ones (UK, US, Australia etc) to obscure (music wise not popularity) nations such as Morocco and Zimbabwe. I know about a huge variety of genres, artists, albums and musical history; you could get me going about the history of either Mick Jagger or John Oakley-Smith (do some research on the Nick Drake of Africa).

Anywhoo, my favourite of these obscure genres is, well, the well known Zamrock scene. My favourite song being the one below, “I am Not Made of Iron” by Chris Tembo, an aggressive, violent and very SICK track with enough distortion to kill a field of cows in Jersey. Here you go:
