The jazz journey of Hilary Geddes- 2021 Freedman Jazz Fellowship Winner
Sydney based jazz guitarist Hilary Geddes has been announced as the recipient of the Freedman Jazz Fellowship for 2021. The highly prestigious Fellowship is awarded annually to musicians under 35 years old. The intention is to give established musicians financial and other support in taking their next, significant career steps. In 2020, Eastside’s Mick Paddon recorded a detailed interview with Hilary. They discussed her music and her musical education. They talked about her musical influences and the challenge in finding female role models among jazz guitarists. Hilary has previously been a recipient of the Jann Rutherford Award which is intended to give young female musicians assistance in establishing themselves . So in the interview Hilary talked about the gender disparities in tertiary music courses, though she says things are changing. Her currently listening reflects her broad range of musical interests and influences.
