Podcast: Breaking Waves

This week on Breaking Waves, Shai and Geoff return with a joyful episode dedicated to one of the world’s great musical pastimes: karaoke.

The show opens with ABBA’s “Dancing Queen”, one of the most famous karaoke songs of all time, before Shai and Geoff dive into the strange, funny and surprisingly poetic world of singing along. Geoff explains that karaoke began in Japan and that the word roughly translates to “empty orchestra”, which leads into a playful discussion about music, parties, performance and why people love getting up to sing.

From there, the episode becomes a full-blown Breaking Waves karaoke competition. Shai takes on Justin Bieber’s “Boyfriend”, A-ha’s “Take On Me” and Toto’s “Africa”, while Geoff steps into the ring with Survivor’s “Eye of the Tiger” and Elvis Presley’s “Suspicious Minds”. With Hugh acting as judge and producer, the contest becomes a hilarious back-and-forth full of applause, audience reactions and plenty of generous scoring.

Along the way, Shai and Geoff chat about Michael Jackson, Elvis Presley, Robbie Williams and world leaders doing karaoke. Shai also reflects on how art and radio support mental health, creativity and self-expression.

The episode finishes with Nancy Sinatra’s “These Boots Are Made for Walkin’”, another karaoke classic and the perfect send-off for a show full of music, jokes and big performances.
