Native Owned: An Evening with Indigenous Enterprise

December 02, 2019

Indulge yourself for an evening with Indigenous Enterprise as they take us on a journey through dance, story, discussion and music. These high energy performers blend traditional customs and culture in an unforgettable celebration of Native American and Canadian pow wow.

The beat of the drum continues in the 21st century with Indigenous Enterprise. This Native American and Canadian collective first stunned crowds at Dance Rites 2018 with their explosively jubilant dance and colourful regalia honouring the legacy of traditional elders. Now, they return to Sydney Opera House this December to welcome you to a celebration of pow wow, dance, music, culture and knowledge sharing in the Utzon Room.

Among a stellar lineup of special guests dancers are Ty Lodgepole (Diné) performing the Men’s Prairie Chicken Dance, Acosia Red Elk (Umatilla people) and Mallary Oakes (Nakaneet First Nations Peoples) performing the Jingle dance (also known as the Healing Dance), Kenneth Thomas Shirley (Navajo) performing the men’s Fancy War Dance; Jorge Gonzales-Zuniga Jr (Salt River Pima-Maricopa Indian Community) demonstrating the intricate footwork, precision, rhythm showmanship of the Hoop Dance used in traditional healing ceremonies, and finally fifth generation drummer and singer Nelson Baker performing live vocals.

Don’t miss your chance to experience this once in a lifetime peek into Native American and Canadian culture.

Presented by Sydney Opera House.
