Musicals are my great passion. Even as a child, I knew that music and theater would play a central role in my life. At the age of three, I wished for my first microphone, and later, I took years of piano and singing lessons. It was my first singing teacher who introduced me to the world of musicals – a world that still captivates me to this day. Thanks to her, I have been performing in musicals myself for years.

But why do I love musicals so much? It is the unique combination of music, acting, and dance that enchants me every time. Musicals tell stories in a way that goes straight to the heart – with melodies that stick with you and emotions that linger long after the curtain falls.

Here are my top 10 musicals (in no particular order) that have touched, inspired, and amazed me the most:

1. Cats

Plot:

Andrew Lloyd Webber’s musical is based on T.S. Eliot’s poetry collection Old Possum’s Book of Practical Cats and tells the story of the Jellicle cats, who gather on a magical night to decide which of them will be reborn. Each cat has its own story, personality, and dreams. The musical is renowned for its iconic dance scenes, mystical atmosphere, and unforgettable melodies.

Why I love it:

The unique staging, the iconic costumes, and of course, the song Memory make Cats an unforgettable experience. But for me, this musical holds an even deeper meaning because I had the privilege of performing in a Cats production myself. This allowed me to experience the music, characters, and overall atmosphere on a much deeper level, making this piece incredibly special to my heart.

2. The Lion King

Plot:

Based on the Disney film of the same name, the musical tells the story of Simba, who must learn to embrace his destiny as king after the tragic death of his father. With impressive African rhythms, stunning costumes, and unique stage design, the savanna comes to life. The musical blends emotion, adventure, and an inspiring coming-of-age story.

Why I love it:

I grew up with The Lion King – it was the first musical I ever saw. The emotional story, the vibrant staging, and legendary songs like Circle of Life instantly drew me in and sparked my love for musicals.

3. Hadestown

Plot:

This musical reimagines the Greek myth of Orpheus and Eurydice with a blend of folk, jazz, and blues. It is set in a dystopian world where Hades rules a bleak underground city. The story revolves around love, sacrifice, and the unrelenting cycle of fate, brought to life through mesmerizing music and stunning visuals.

Why I love it:

The dark atmosphere, poetic lyrics, and unique musical style make Hadestown an absolute masterpiece. I was particularly impressed by the current production in Sydney, which captivated me with its incredible staging and outstanding cast.

4. Les Misérables

Plot:

Based on Victor Hugo’s novel, this musical tells the story of Jean Valjean, a former convict seeking redemption while being relentlessly pursued by Inspector Javert. It highlights social injustices in 19th-century France and brings themes of justice, love, and revolution to the stage. With iconic songs and deeply emotional characters, it remains one of the most significant musicals of all time.

Why I love it:

Les Misérables is simply breathtaking. The epic music, dramatic storyline, and songs like I Dreamed a Dream make this musical a timeless classic that never fails to give me goosebumps. Susan Boyle was the one, who made clear for me how much technique stands behind these amazing songs.

5. Wicked

Plot:

The untold story of The Wizard of Oz, told from the perspective of the “wicked witch” Elphaba. The musical explores her friendship with Glinda, her societal exclusion, and the events that lead to her being known as the “Wicked Witch of the West.” With magical effects, humorous moments, and a touching story about being an outsider and self-acceptance, it is one of the most successful musicals of all time.

Why I love it:

Wicked features one of the biggest songs in musical history: Defying Gravity. This makes it particularly special for musical performers – after all, who doesn’t dream of singing this legendary song on a grand stage? The story about friendship, self-discovery, and acceptance makes Wicked one of the most moving musicals ever.

6. La La Land

Plot:

While technically a movie musical, La La Land has the heart and soul of a Broadway show. It follows the love story of an aspiring actress and a jazz musician, capturing their dreams, struggles, and the bittersweet reality of pursuing artistic careers.

Why I love it:

The cinematography, the nostalgic yet fresh music, and the emotional ending make La La Land unforgettable. Songs like City of Stars stay with you, and the story beautifully captures the passion and sacrifice of being an artist.

7. Hamilton

Plot:

Lin-Manuel Miranda’s revolutionary musical tells the story of Alexander Hamilton through a mix of hip-hop, rap, and traditional Broadway melodies. It brings history to life with a modern and diverse cast, making 18th-century events feel fresh and relevant.

Why I love it:

The lyrical brilliance, the fast-paced storytelling, and the sheer energy of Hamilton make it a must-see. The way Miranda weaves history and music together is nothing short of genius.

8. My Fair Lady

Plot:

A classic tale of transformation, My Fair Lady follows Eliza Doolittle, a flower seller who is taught proper speech and manners by Professor Higgins. What starts as a social experiment turns into a heartwarming and witty story of self-discovery and class struggles.

Why I love it:

The music is timeless, and songs like I Could Have Danced All Night bring pure joy. The humor and depth of the characters make this a classic that never gets old.

9. Cabaret

Plot:

Set in 1930s Berlin, Cabaret follows a young American writer and his relationship with the free-spirited Sally Bowles, all against the backdrop of the rising Nazi regime. The story is both dazzling and tragic, showing the fragility of freedom and art in troubled times.

Why I love it:

The show’s boldness, the haunting performances, and songs like Maybe This Time make it a masterpiece. It’s a musical that stays with you long after the final note.

10. The Phantom of the Opera

Plot:

Andrew Lloyd Webber’s famous musical tells the story of the mysterious Phantom who lives in the Paris Opera House and falls deeply in love with the young singer Christine. With its dramatic score, opulent sets, and tragic love story, it is one of the most successful musicals of all time.

Why I love it:

The music of The Phantom of the Opera is simply unforgettable. Especially the song The Point of No Return holds deep significance for me – it was the beginning of my interest in classical music. The dramatic intensity of this song, combined with its powerful orchestration, immediately captivated me and expanded my musical horizon. Every song contributes to the suspense and atmosphere of the musical, making it an absolute highlight.

These ten musicals are tied to some of the most beautiful, emotional, and inspiring moments of my life. They have shaped me as a musician and as a person – and they will always be a part of me.
