Jazz Made In Australia – Monday 29 Feb 2016 – Paula Langlands

February 29, 2016

The word latin, as it pertains to music, like jazz, is an umbrella covering many different styles and cultures. There is Brazilian, Cuban Argentinian, Mexican to name a few. This week I’m going to bring you one more on JMIA, one I was not aware of previously until Perth based drummer Daniel Susnjar brought it to my attention.

It’s called Afro Peruvian jazz and, as the name implies, emanates from the rhythms and songs of the African slaves brought in to the South American countries a couple of centuries ago.

Daniel Susnjar (pronounced Sus ’n jar, you must pronounce the ’n’ says Daniel) is my guest on the program this week and I will be asking him about this music and why he chose it as his dissertation for his recently received doctorate of Music and the recording he made as a result of it.

If you want to hear examples of Peruvian Jazz tune into Jazz Made In Australia on Monday 29 February ’16  or online. The program will open with a track from Daniel’s cd ‘Su Su Nje’ called Enciendete Candela.
