Year 10 Work Experience: Exploring all things radio

I’ve always been a supporter of radio. Whether it’s listening in my spare time, music for the drive home, or something to unwind in bed, the Radio is a way for me to expand my music taste, listen to people’s stories, without the limitations of choosing every track, or my eyes glued to a screen.
The community engagement aspect also appeals to me! I love the ABC news radio quiz and their talk show, and while I haven’t built up the confidence to call up yet, I love listening to people’s stories.
Eastside FM at Paddington, while a bit of a journey away, is a beautiful community station that warmly welcomed me into this short internship! It was difficult to find radio places that were accepting of work experience placements, and the one that I think I would learn the most from was Tony and his wonderful team at Eastside! The website displays some things we will be involved in, and I would recommend this program for anyone looking for their work experience placement. For the next week, I’ll be learning and helping where I can about all things broadcasting, producing, and writing for Radio.
I’m extremely grateful for this experience and would love to engage more with Eastside in the future!
I enjoy all types of music, from Rock, to Indie, to Soul, R&B, Jazz and Pop, and working with Eastside allows me to explore some of the more niche Jazz songs that my generation doesn’t hear much. Artists like Aretha Franklin, Stevie Wonder and Radiohead, as well as my half-sister, Australian singer-songwriter Julia Jacklin, have given me the courage to explore different music, from other Australian artists (Eastside broadcasts 50% local music).
Apart from music, I am a theatre enthusiast, winning the 2023 State Shakespeare Carnival, and I enjoy talking, presenting and informing! Broadcasting on the radio, or the news, is something I will continue to pursue, though I acknowledge it’s a LOT more difficult than I initially thought! I’m involved in this internship to explore the roles in Radio, including writing, presenting and producing, and what it takes to run and volunteer at a radio station!
I have settled into the cozy station, had a tour of the three studios, and have been working on setting up and familiarising myself for a successful next week. There is a lot to learn, but I’m extremely excited to learn more about Radio at Eastside!

I’m extremely lucky to have found Eastside for my work experience block, especially during the annual Radiothon, where there is a lot to do! While I haven’t been here long, it is a friendly environment where I feel at home, and I am eager to continue through my week.
