Arts Thursday 1 October 2020 focuses on makers, artists and works which inspire, explore and look to change attitudes – particularly in this time of COVID19, underpinning the role of craft, art and design in our lives.

Join Maisy Stapleton and Paula Towers to meet Julie Ryder, whose work explores botany – its history; collectors and the often-unacknowledged contribution made by women to botanical exploration and discovery.

Julie Ryder

Julie joins us to discuss her exhibition Submerged, at the Barometer Gallery, which honors early seaweed collections made by women in the 19th century. Julie is a scientist, whose background informs her work as a textile artist, designer and educator.

Our second guest is Tanya Chaitow, an artist with Stella Downer Fine Art, whose magical works have been an inspiration to Maisy for many years.

Tanya talks about the ideas behind her subjects and the background to her artistic practice. Her work is informed by her early life in South Africa, her love of nature, her empathy with animals and belief in humanity combined in a vision of whimsy; exemplifying the underlying links with nature and the mystical wisdom of animals. Tanya will be exhibiting later in the year with Stella Downer.

This year’s fourth Sydney Craft Week Festival runs from 8 – 18th October and presents a full program of exhibitions, demonstrations, workshops and more.

Sasha Titchkowsky and Lisa Cahill

We meet Lisa Cahill CEO and Artistic Director of the Australian Design Centre and Sasha Titchkosky a co-founder of Koskela the innovative business at Rosebery, designing, making and selling Australian products for the home This year Sasha has been recognised as the Chief Change Maker of the Crafts Week Festival and she and Lisa join in a discussion not only about Craft Week, but the impact and influence of craft in a changing environment.
