The new series, Changing the Face of Jazz, focusses on young Australian women who have been making their names as jazz instrumentalists in the past few years. All of them have participated in projects which were aimed explicitly at encouraging more young women to study jazz and think about it a as a musical career. Most have been recipients of the prestigious Jann Rutherford Memorial Award. They are all changing the face of jazz.
The focus of this week’s Changing the Face of Jazz is pianist Emma Stephenson , the recipient of the 2016, the most recent, Jann Rutherford Award. Emma talks about her long-standing love of the piano, and her early decision to make music her career. Her project supported by the Award is a collaboration between her Hieronymus Trio and vocalist Gian Slater. Emma’s profile, including music from her trio’s first CD released last year, is available here as a podcast. It was first broadcast on Monday 16 January as part of the weekly show, Jazz Made in Australia
