American Essentials Film Festival.

Straddling styles as diverse as thriller, melodrama, adventure, comedy, coming of age, body horror, political documentary, symphonic documentary, classics, music, cult, art, and biography (deep breath)... there is bound to be something for every film buff out there at the American essentials film festival which hits Sydney this week!
Opening night film is 20th Century Women from director Mike Mills (Beginners), starring Annette Bening, Greta Gerwig and Elle Fanning. It’s about a single mother raising her teenage son in the late 1970s with the help of two other women. Its screenplay was nominated for an Oscar this year. A documentary on Australian Bond George Lazenby is another highlight.

On at Palace Verona and Norton street, various times.

Head on Photo Festival

Australia's largest photography festival takes over Sydney in May with a flotilla of exhibitions, events and talks.
The major international highlight for the 2017 festival is Bowie Unseen, an exhibition of photographs of the late pop star by celebrity and fashion photographer Markus Klinko. The 24-photo exhibition draws from the photo shoot for Bowie's 2002 album Heathen, and a cover shoot for GQ that same year.

Locally, the late Rennie Ellis is getting another showing of his Kings Cross photography, focusing on the summer of 1970-71.

A great way to spend an afternoon and it is completely free!
