Chasing The Moon – A Sydney Gipsy Jazz Band

November 02, 2016

Sydney gypsy jazz band, Chasing the Moon plays the music of Django Reinhardt and Stephane Grappelli with an energy and commitment that’s reminiscent of the great jazz of days gone by. The exuberant and romantic sounds of jazz manouche are blended with classic American swing and south of the border Latin to create an engaging and lively performance style. The joy is infectious and will definitely make you smile, too.

There is freshness in the way different styles are combined, a mix of hot club with the blues, a touch of folk, flirting with Latin rhythms, lashings of swing and modern elements, too.

Kathy Bluff delivers her distinctive style of soulful vocals and swinging jazz violin with warmth and charm, Paul Burjan adds glittering soprano and tenor sax, and John Blenkhorn provides the rhythmic pulse and Django-esque solos. That essential Parisian ambience comes with the piano accordion of Garry Steel, while John Conley on double bass and Rodney Ford on drums lay down the best of grooves. Often in danger of stealing the show, they are the rhythmic backbone of the band, playing sweet and in the pocket.

Don’t miss your chance to see Chasing the Moon live on Friday 18 November at the Prince Henry Centre in Little Bay! The performance starts at 7pm, but the In-flight Bar and Diner already opens at 6pm serving delicious snacks and a great selection of wines and beers.
