From the mind of Gumbayngirr/Wiradjuri playwright Dalara Williams, this sharp and exciting new play brings with it joy, hilarity and an insightful look into the lives of three Indigenous women in the midst of 60s Redfern.
Redfern 1966. 3 lives. 3 perspectives. A friendship and a love story woven together.
Cheryl, Lulu and Queenie are hopeful, dynamic and cheerful young women gearing up for the major event of the year – Deb ball – when their lives and country change drastically.
1966 represented the end of many eras and marked the beginning of new ones. Coming up at the heels of the referendum, it brought hopes for a promising new era in Australia.
But that’s not all ‘Big Girls Don’t Cry’ is about. As Dalara says herself, it showcases “another aspect of Aboriginal life, one that we never get to tell: black joy and black love”. It is as much of a story of youth and joy, as it is a cultural microcosm of the bold and daring 60s.
