The Kármán Line – Outer Worlds Jazz Ensemble

The Kármán Line brings Outer Worlds Jazz Ensemble together with Chip Wickham for seven tracks of deep spiritual jazz with plenty of groove. The project grew from conversations between Wickham and ATA Records founder Neil Innes while exploring Tokyo jazz kissas and record shops. Plus a shared love of Yusef Lateef, David Axelrod and Alice Coltrane gives the album its cosmic compass. Wickham’s flute floats through harp piano and richly coloured horn arrangements while the music moves from meditative textures to funkier low orbit moments. It is thoughtful expansive and never too precious. Basically if space had a very tasteful Leeds rhythm section this might be what it plays while checking the oxygen levels before takeoff.

Disco Dress – Tiaryn

Disco Dress is Tiaryn’s first full length album and it sounds like an artist taking her time on purpose. Recorded over three years with producer Josh Barber the record leans away from neat pop formulas and moves through soul jazz and gritty alternative textures. Lush harmonies lulling synths, grimy guitars, strings, pedal steel, harp and percussion all help build its cinematic world. Tiaryn’ frames the album around transformation, self worth and trust. Emotional luggage she carries with style. Songs including Safely Goodbye More Than Skin and the title track explore difficult change with warmth and sparkle.
