November 25, 2023

The Lahaar – The Lahaar

Drawing inspiration from the depths of late 70’s NYC proto-rap disco instrumentals, Nigerian boogie, Jamaican dub and modern jazzy house – The Lahaar is a Trans-Tasman collaboration between Melbourne’s Horatio Luna and Surprise Chef’s Lachlan Stuckey, as well as New Zealanders Julien Dyne, Mara TK and Toby Laing. Their eponymous album The Lahaar is a five track journey that includes funky organ riffs, siren vocals, jazz-funk melodies, dub echoes, nods to 70s cop movie funk and many more features that make it as groovy as it is. The album touches on elements of dub, funk and disco while maintaining a live, improvisational feel.

In Real Time – Artemis

Three years after the release of Artemis’ critically acclaimed self-titled debut album, the group now returns with their new album In Real Time that highlights the improvisational strength of its members as well as their respective gifts as composers. The eight track album showcases captivating originals as well as arrangements of songs including Lyle Mays’ Slink, and Wayne Shorter’s Penelope. With robust voices, free jazz diversions, modal patterns, strong instrumentals, and high chemistry, the group lives up to the capability and strength that the goddess they are named after presents.
