Album of the Week: LO-LIFE! – Immy Owusu // Face to Face – Nikki Iles

January 10, 2024

LO-LIFE! – Imi Owusu

Immy Owusu’s debut LP LO-LIFE! draws on the West African styles as well as psychedelic features. Immy describes his sound as a “lo-fi highlife” and is inspired by his Ghanaian roots as well as his Australian upbringing.  LO-LIFE! is live-tracked with an all-star band. Throughout the album, Immy sings in both English and Twi with a commanding tone, whilst the band supports him behind. Delicate fingerpicked electric guitar dance around, anchored by hypnotic riffs on the second guitar, pulsing bass and cool drums. The quirky monosynth leads take center stage when Immy isn’t leading and drum rhythms, provide an enchanting touch.

Face to Face – Nikki Iles

This excellent album from Nikki Iles and the NDR Big Band showcases the exact state of Big Band jazz. With a wonderfully varied program, Nikki’s elegant compositions are impeccably played by the big band. The charts are rich in detail, and care is taken that this is not lost in the recording. The songs demonstrate beautiful solos, lovely riffs, and a unique groove, which are used in compelling originals as well as inspiring arrangements. Nikki is truly an inspiration, and has the courage and listeners are privileged to hear the work of her commitment tog such fine works as this.
