Linger Awhile – Samara Joy
Samara Joy is an internationally renowned 3 time Grammy award winner at only 24 years old. As a young standout, she has already won the ‘Best Jazz Vocal Album’ award with her second album Linger Awhile. With solemn lyrics that pull at the heartstrings, her song Guess Who I Saw Today is a standout. In general, the album showcases her remarkable improvisational and compositional talent, as well as her warm and round tone that is constantly being commented on. Furthermore, her take on the jazz standard Misty is one that has captured audiences with clever choices of improvisation. Joy’s brilliance is often compared to Billie Holiday and Ella Fitzgerald, and her emergence is one that should be followed with great support.
This is How You Do it – The Bamboos
As The Bamboos’ 11th studio album, This is How You Do it proves how the nine piece group from Melbourne continues to evolve even after 29 years as a band. Guaranteed to get you up and dancing, this album is fun, festive, funky and creative. The band showcases imperial grooves and rhythms for the funk and soul scene of Melbourne, and provides pieces that are reminiscent of bubbly disco beats that once played at rollerskating rinks in the 70s. From the horns-aloft punch to the contemporary spin on classic sounds, The Bamboos remain a band that has always been exceptional. But there is some new DNA in the mix, including new member Reginald AK who contributes with creamy vocals and organ tunes.
