A Wicked night with an even wickeder production

January 30, 2024

As I sat comfortably in my seat at the Sydney Lyric Theatre at Pyrmont, excitement bubbles in anticipation for the musical magic to unfold.

Late last month, I had the opportunity to attend Wicked to see the ‘untold true story of the Witches of Oz’.

And what a story that was!

The whole musical production from stage designs and costumes to song and dance were incredible and I was in awe for the whole duration of it.

This is the third time Wicked has returned to the land of Aus in 15 years, and the return has been solemnly welcomed with open arms.

It was a fun experience because I didn’t know any of the lore behind Wicked, so it was interesting to see how it was going to go.

It mainly followed the story of two unlikely friends, Elphaba (Courtney Monsma) and Galinda (Sheridan Adams) who go on a quest to the Emerald City to find the Wizard of Oz whilst learning to deal with their opposing personalities, love triangles and flying monkeys.

I was quite fond of Galinda, not pronounced Glinda of course, because she was bubbly and caring, plus her hilarious one-liners and jokes played another huge factor in how much I loved the musical.

Despite her ditsy personality and oftentimes shallow and vapid thinking, she ultimately has a good heart.

The props and stage design were amazing, paired with the catchy tunes and dancing between acts were all fantastic.

If I had to choose a favourite song of mine from the night it would be ‘Popular’ sung by Galinda, performed when she tries to give Elphaba a makeover as their new friendship begins to blossom.

Wicked was a wonderful performance and speaking as someone who just recently developed a passion for attending theatre and musicals, I would suggest this to anyone looking for a fun and entertaining event to attend.

The musical’s last day is on February 4, 2024, so act quickly if you want to see the bewitching story in person!
