An Espresso Ride Through The Cross

January 12, 2016
What do a sex worker, a nun and a taxi driver have in common? They all drink coffee at the Piccolo Bar in Kings Cross which has attracted celebrities and locals alike over 50 years.  These characters (and more) are channelled and paid homage to in the return season of Piccolo Tales, playing every Tuesday and Thursday from 16 February 2016.
Returning for the Sydney Gay and Lesbian Mardi Gras after a critically acclaimed, sell-out 4-month season last year,
Piccolo Tales – starring Vashti Hughes – promises an even slicker show with new scenes, new tunes and new characters. There are also new seats in the park across the road from the Piccolo Bar – where audience can take in the unique character of Kings Cross while tuned into the show with Wi-Fi headphones provided.
The Piccolo Bar has drawn celebrities and colourful locals alike for five decades.

And central to its story is Vittorio, the cafe’s 81-year-old proprietor, loved by all for his strong opinions (and strong language). A Kings Cross institution, he has witnessed its dramatic change from behind his coffee machine.Piccolo Tales (from the creative team behind the smash-hit “Mum’s In: Stories from Razorhurst”) is a roller coaster ride
through five decades of Kings Cross including Les Girls, Vietnam, Heroin, Rave and Pram Mafia.
This acclaimed show is not for the claustrophobic. The intimate experience is strictly for ten people inside the Piccolo Bar – with extra seats on the street. Piccolo Tales is an entertaining and, at times, confronting piece about a changing urban landscape and the many piccolo tales that helped create it.
