The Crump Cake Orchestra are an exciting new group from South Australia. For once the use of orchestra in the band name is no misnomer, this group has 18 members! Harking back to the era of big bands, but producing a sound with a distinctive modern twist; their debut album is a wonderful juxtaposition of big band horns, with a super tight, funk-infused rhythm section.
Largely instrumental, there are a few tracks featuring the vocals of Alex Mckay, with the quirky reworking of the children’s song Toffee Apple standing out. The Crump Cake Orchestra is the brainchild of Evan Bassani, and like an old school impresario, he’s not performing the music, he’s just composing, arranging, mixing; dare i say it, orchestrating the wonderful sounds this group create.
An exciting new sound from a state that is underrepresented in the Australian music scene. Keep an eye on these guys.
