Album of the Week – ‘Drop It Like It’s Ott’ by Mister Ott
‘Drop It Like It’s Ott’ by Mister Ott is Eastside Radio’s Album of the Week.
The debut release from the Sydney eight-piece showcases and eclectic array of musical genre’s from across the globe. Bandleader and saxophonist Matthew Ottignon takes on the group’s creative direction with compositions inspired by his worldly travels. The rhythms and harmonies of Ethiopia in particular became interwoven into Ottignon’s musical stylings following a tour of the country with Dereb the Ambassador and listening to the musical stylings of Mulatu Astatke.
The result, and electric Funk Jazz and East African melting pot of pure musical goodness. It is the perfect amalgamation of the heart of jazz music that is improviation and the rhythmic drives found radiating from the engine rooms native to East African musicians. Ottignon himself says about the album; “Hopefully the audience will take home a feeling of jazz that maybe isn’t what they expected.” Mister Ott features a stellar cast of talented Australian musicians including Ellen Kirkwood, Daniel Pliner, Ben Panucci, Eden Ottignin and Dan Kennedy.
