The Big Payback showcases the raw emotion of soul, the bass-heavy rhythm of funk, and the stylings of sample-based “golden age” and contemporary underground hip-hop – never the tiresome “guns/jewellery/cars” fare played on commercial stations.

Wedged amidst Eastside’s Friday night groove-fest, the show aims both to get listeners’ heads nodding and to put hip hop in its proper historical context – as new music developed through the use and manipulation of existing music.

The Big Payback is hosted by The Flying Fist and Graflex Flash – two intractable music boffins with big record collections and even bigger mouths.
