ASTSIDE RADIO PRESENTS LIVE AT THE RESERVOIR CD
Eastside Radio’s inaugural CD presentation, ‘Live at the Reservoir’, captures and highlights the essence of Sydney’s world-standard working musicians and performers. Artists only too happy to support Eastside Radio further the promotion of the Australian music industry.
In the first three tracks ‘Blue Prelude’, ‘Sugar’ and ‘Compared to What’, Lily Dior’s sultry sounds soar above the lush backgrounds created by Matt McMahon, Cameron Undy and Jamie Cameron.
Then Bernie McGann, Lloyd Swanton and Carl Dewhurst provide a superbly gently swinging atmosphere for Susan Gai Dowling’s evocative renditions of I Love You, Lover Man and Scotch and Soda.
A complete change of direction finds Ben Fink’s vocal and his punchy guitar on ‘She Says’. Backing trio, Matt McMahon, Toby Hall and Greg Royal sit in a funky comfort zone on that track before nimbly changing gears to truly rock on with Ben now in full flight on “I’m Gonna Get There’. A more settled measure shows the group’s versatility in the Latin inspired version of ‘Blessed’.
Finally the mastery of Bob Bertles Quintet, [Col Nolan, Steve Brien, Laurie Bennett and Deiter Voight] awards us with a bouncy version of ‘Chaser’, soothing sensuality in “Body and Soul’ and a pacey musical expose of Lerner and Loewe’s ‘Gigi’.
Congratulations must go to the recorders, Keith Walker, David Bates, and Mark Avis for capturing such a ‘bright’ sound at an outdoor event.
May this inaugural pressing be the first in a long series.
