Bellyache Ben on The Showdown, 5.12.11

Bellyache Ben brought his Steamgrass Boys onto The Showdown, to discuss bluegrass, beards, and colour-coordinating your sunglasses to another band member’s shirt. The boys also performed live in the studio, complete with beautiful 4-part harmony. Check out their album launch this Friday at Caravan in Marrickville.

Benjamin Hibbard

Benjamin Hibbard

A big thankyou to Ben Hibbard (brother of John) who filled in while John was off working and/or playing for the last few weeks. Being percussionist for local Frank Zappa tribute band Petulant Frenzy, Ben’s selections included a good whack of vibraphone players, and obviously some Zappa, alongside country music, Toto, Lalo Schifrin, John Barry, [...]

The Showdown with Martin Kay, 11.4.11

Martin came in to chat about the launch of Song Fwaa’s album Ligeti’s Goat. A fascinating interview with this master of wild improvisation and saxophone. The launch was great, as is the record.

The Showdown with Casey Nicholson, 4.4.11

On the 4th of April we were joined by our good mate Casey Nicholson for a three way Showdown. Casey presented a great jazz show on 2MBS for a while and is now based in Darwin, he’s a mean jazz trumpeter and big music fan.
