As the new year arrives, full of hope and excitement at the prospect of new projects, music, shows, friends and events, we take the time to look back at the year that was and look to the future – a very bright 2012 for Eastside Radio.

We started 2011 with Jazz in Continuum –following the success of the first Jazz In Continuum event in 2010. This important event has grown to develop a new audience for Eastside Radio, providing a platform for young Jazz musicians to perform and also connect with professionals and mentors in the industry.

In June we launched our annual Radiothon Soul Support 2011 with Swingin Soul, a hugely successful night at the now closed Tone Nightclub. We were incredibly lucky to have Little Egypt’s Burlesque perform on the night, a ten-piece band featuring some of Sydney and Melbourne’s most talented musicians including Elana Stone, Brian Campeau and Lucian McGuiness. The incredible Mr Percival and the ever-vivacious Lilly Dior also took to the stage, with DJ Burnhard and Smokey La Beef and Smart Casual working the decks. Dancing was the name of the game with incredible burlesque provided by Gallery Burlesque dancers and swing steps performed by the Swing Patrol kids. Swingin Soul really set the tone for 2011 – good fun, great music and new opportunities to share the Eastside sound with a growing audience.

Our Radiothon, Soul Support provided just the ticket for the continuing growth of Eastside Radio. We received more support than ever from local and nationwide businesses, and were able to offer prizes ranging from Paddington shopping experiences to Far North Queensland Getaways. Our listeners dug deep and supported their favourite radio station, with money raised going to assist in the upgrade of our studio equipment and ongoing costs in running the station.

We were incredibly excited to join The Sydney Fringe Festival in September at Five Eliza, the official Fringe Festival bar in Newtown. Eastside Radio presenters Lilly Dior, Susan Gai Dowling, Taline Kalaidjian and Julian Hibbard and John Curwin with The Sluggs. The venue was stunning and we had a lot of fun chatting to festival goers about the music of Eastside Radio. We received some great feedback about Eastside Radio’s talent and were very excited to see that there is a groundswell of young people who are passionate about good live music.

After the success of Five Eliza we developed a night with our good friends at 505, a night that showcased the diverse sound of Eastside Radio on stage. Eastside Live at 505 was born, with a focus on presenting music for an audience who enjoyed good music, a bit of a dance and a fun night out. Live broadcast on Eastside 89.7fm, Eastside Live at 505 has showcased music from The Vampires, Alphamama and The Love Drug, Mucho Mambo and Hobo Bordeaux. This monthly night of music has grown immeasurably in a few short months, with the second Thursday of every month at 505 quickly developing a loyal following.

Sadly, on December 4, 2011 Wally Wrightman, a long time presenter at Eastside Radio and very dear friend passed away. After 25 years on air, Wally developed a loyal base of listeners and the loss of this great man was felt far and wide. We received countless phonecalls, letters and webposts testifying to Wally’s personable, loving and lively personality, with many listeners and friends expressing their sorrow at the passing of such an exceptional person and engaging performer/ presenter. Wally’s legacy lives on at Eastside Radio through his fellow presenters, staff and listeners.

Our Xmas Radiothon, 12 Days of Xmas was our biggest yet, with prizes generously donated from some of our favourite Business Supporters. We showcased the best of the best with goods and services from around Australia and an international getaway to New Zealand thanks to Beach Lodge Villas and Travbiz. Once again we were blown away by the support of our listeners, who called to pledge their support financially and also express their love of the station to us verbally.

January kicked off with our first Eastside Live at 505 for 2012 with Hobo Bordeaux taking to the stage. This was a sellout event, with more listeners than ever coming out to support the station.

2012 brings an exciting lineup at Eastside Live at 505, including DOUBLE DIP on Feb 9th, a performance night with Eastside Radio Presenters bringing their skills to the stage. Each performer will be presenting one tune from their repertoire and one tune from a completely different genre. This is going to be a night of laughs, fun and most importantly – Great music!! With Matt McMahon, Lloyd Swanton and Toby Hall on Rythmn and Lilly Dior, Susan Gai Dowling, Helen Fenton, and Taline Kalaidjian on vocals, Dan Barnett and Bob Bertles on horn and special appearances by your other favouite presenters including Chris Horsey, John Hibbard and Julian Curwin, this night is going to be a veritable buffet of talent, humor and unexpected surprises.

Jazz in Continuum returns for 2012 in April, growing even bigger and better. Featuring more new artists, acts and arrangements than ever, Jazz in Continuum will continue to put the spotlight on the best emerging talent that Sydney has to offer.

After a rained out 2011 event, Global Rhythms will return in 2012. Plans are already underway to bring Sydney the best world music Eastside has to offer with local, national and international acts performing at this free community concert.

And then of course there are the incredible music, presenters and programs that air on Eastside Radio 89.7fm every day. We have new presenters, new shows and new time slots with your old favourites returning once again in 2012 to bring you the music they like best. We have new arts presenters, and our drive shows are booking some of the most interesting interviews you’re likely to hear this year. So stay tuned, stay in touch and welcome in 2012 with Eastside Radio!

We asked our Eastside Radio Interns for their top tips for prizes during our 12 Days of Xmas Radiothon – check out the amazing prizes we have HERE and make your own list of favourites!

KATE’S TOP 3 PRIZES:

#1 First Prize: New Zealand Beach Getaway Including flights and relaxing massage

As intern at Eastside radio, I looked through all the prizes that could be won for 12 Days of Christmas and almost jumped off my feet when I saw the New Zealand holiday prize. In my opinion, it is the ultimate prize with 6 night’s accommodation at Beach Lodge Apartments on the magnificent Coopers Beach. I was most excited about the many facilities the location has to offer with water activities such as kayaking and boogie boarding and with my own private gym. For a stressful person like me, it made me long for a 1 hour multi Vitamin facial and 1 hour massage by Ula from The Essentials Massage and Beauty Therapy, which comes along with the prize. I highly recommend this prize for those like myself who long to get away! EVERYONE IS ELEGABLE TO WIN THIS MAJOR PRIZE – SIMPLY SIGN UP AND SUPPORT!

#2 Spring Court $150 voucher

A girl loves shoes and I am no exception. This prize also caught my eye, especially for a shoe lover like me. Spring Court is a vintage shoe. But this is no ordinary shoe. The attention to quality is what makes this shoe stand out above all the rest. These shoes are made of canvas with an Egyptian cotton and are machine washable. I would be very excited to win these shoes for they make a great prize for shoe lovers and shoe collectors.SPRING COURT SHOES VOUCHER IS AVAILABLE AS A SPOT PRIZE FOR ANY BUSINESS SUPPORTER!

#3 Expel Pest Solutions Roach Treatment $100 value

I hate cockroaches and this summer, I know that my house will be filled with them. That’s why this prize is so great. Expel Pest Solutions is small business but one thing I can be sure of is that they get the job done. Words that can describe them – reliable, friendly, professional and quick. With them on hand, you won’t have to worry about seeing another cockroach ever again. EXPEL PEST SOLUTIONS ROACH TREATMENT IS A SPOT PRIZE FOR GOLD AND BUSINESS SUPPORTERS!

  ERNST’S TOP PICKS

#1 Blue Mountains Live Music Getaway

When I looked at the list with the prizes you can win at our Eastside Radiothon, one particular price draw my attention: A double pass for two nights at The Clarendon Guesthouse in the Blue Mountains! I went to the Blue Mountains some weeks ago and I can tell you, it’s been the best experience I’ve had in Sydney so far as an intern from Germany. Of course I also visited Katoomba, the most popular village of these beautiful mountains, which is not only the linchpin from where many famous hiking treks lead into the wilderness, it is also the place in which the Clarendon Guesthouse is located.

When you step into the Clarendon Guesthouse you enter a new world: Being built in the 1920’s, the Clarendon offers a warm and antique atmosphere and takes its guests back to the times of true musicians. Now known as the ‘Blue Mountains home for live music’, the Clarendon has been host for a numerous amount of artists and their gigs over the last decades.

And as if it wasn’t awesome enough to spend two nights in this iconic venue, the winner of the second major price of our Eastside Radiothon also gets a double pass to a gig of Tuba Skinny, a jazz and blues band whose 6 members met on the streets of New Orleans. As they play music from the 1920s and 1930s, there could not be a better venue than the Clarendon to host this concert. EVERYONE IS ELEGABLE TO WIN THIS GETAWAY – SIMPLY SIGN UP AND SUPPORT!

# 2 All of Eastside Radio’s Feature Albums from 2011

I came to Sydney 3 month ago, and as the limit weight for luggage was set to 23kg by my flight company, I had to leave all my favorite CDs at home… But I was lucky and got an internship at Eastside radio, the perfect place to have access to all sorts of new music! That’s why – if I had the choice – I would probably choose the collection of Eastside’s Albums Of The Week among all the other fabulous prizes of the Eastside Radiothon.
For 25 weeks now our music director Sam Allen has selected the best albums that were released during this period, which means the winner of this prize will get all these 25 discs! Sandy Evans, Peter Knight, Dan Barnett and Lee McAllister are only some of the artists whose albums had the honor to be appointed by Sam.
One of my favorite albums is “Monsters Dont Sleep OK!” by the Sydney-based producer Meem, a unique album which combines various styles of music, including soul, funk, hip hop, dub, gypsy and disco, and creates a mix that simply makes you want to dance. I can also recommend “To The Horses”, the groovy debut album of singer Lanie Lane, and “Takadimi” by the only recently founded band The New Common Sense. Listen to Takadimi whenever you are in a not so good mood, because its mix “manages to maintain a fun and vibrant theme throughout”, just to quote Sam, our music manager. EVERY SUPPORTER CAN WIN A FEATURE ALBUM- SIGN UP AND SUPPORT!

REBECCA`S TOP 3 PRIZES

#1 Time Out Magazine

I `m a German intern and stay in Sydney for 5 months. I have no idea what is going in Sydney or what I should do and therefore I read the amazing Time Out Magazine. When you want to know what incredible events or exhibitions are in Sydney, you should choose the 3 months subscription of the Time Out Magazine.

The magazine has many different categories like music, restaurants, museums and much more. You get a great overview about what you can do in Sydney! EVERY SINGLE SUPPORTER GET A TIME OUT MAGAZINE SUBSCRIPTION SIGN UP HERE!

#2 Sydney Festival 2012

I`m a girl from Germany and stay the summer in Sydney therefore I have to go to the Sydney festival. It`s at the second weekend in January and of course this date is red marked in my diary. It is an amazing festival with a lot of different events from music, theatre, dance, visual arts, ideas, free and family events including the Festival First Night. When you want to visit this great festival you should choose one of the different tickets.
One event is a double pass for Joshua Redman and Bred Meldau. When you love jazz music you have to go to this concert. Both of them are fantastic jazz musicians and the duo has reunited after 15 years, with Sydney Festival the first opportunity to hear this thrilling combination in Australia.
If you like Afro-Cuban music be part of the concert from Pedrito Martinez. With his Peruvian, Venezuelan and Cuban bandmates you cannot sit still, you have to dance to this great music. Be part of the brilliant festival! EVERY EASTSIDE SUPPORTER IS ELEGABLE TO WIN THIS TICKETS – SIGN UP NOW!

#3 How the Grinch Stole Christmas – framed print from the Art of Dr Seuss Gallery

As I was a child I loved the stories of Dr. Seuss. One of my favourites was “How The Grinch Stole Christmas” I would love to get the framed print “ How the Grinch Stole Christmas”. Everyone has a connection to this brilliant Christmas story written by Dr. Seuss. This is such a great prize, even as a Christmas gift for a child or friends.
In some lunchtime I visit the Art Gallery of Dr Seuss at 8 Oxford St, Woollahra and have a look at the amazing prints, but my favourite print is “How The Grinch Stole Christmas”, because of the two bright colours and the Grinch figure. I like the colours used very festive! EVERY SUPPORTER CAN WIN THIS PRINT- SIGN UP AND SUPPORT!

ELENA`S TOP PICKS

#1 High Flyer’s Little Secret on New Year’s Day
2011 has been a very successful year for me so I definitely think that it’s worth celebrating two days! For that reason “High Flyer’s Little Secret” would be the perfect prize for me to win. Just going on dancing to great DJs’s music – right where I stopped the night before. Or even – if I don’t feel like dancing– it would be nice to be chilling outdoors and slipping some delicious Cocktails.
Sitting in the sun, enjoying an ice-cold beer or a fruity Cocktail, having a nice chat and listening to great music; that’s how I imagine a perfect public holiday at “High Flyer’s Little Secret”. But rocking the dance floor to celebrate all the crazy stuff you did last year is something you shouldn’t forget either of course! So: “High Flyer’s Little Secret” would be the perfect mixture of enjoying and celebrating a day off! HIGH FLYER`S LITTLE SECRET ON NEW YEAR`S DAY IS A SPOT PRIZE FOR GOLD AND BUSINESS SUPPORTERS!

#2 $200 voucher for Walsh’s Pharmacy
I can think of some many things I would allow myself with a $2000 Voucher of Walsh’s Pharmacy; the very first thing would be a massage. I bet that’s the first thing many people would buy first of all. I mean, what is more relaxing than a person kneading all your tensions out of your body? I always feel like a new person afterwards and believe in aiming everything I want to! So why not spending some voucher credits on feeling like a hero for a short time?
I would also love to finally get a professional mani- and pedicure because – to be honest- my toenails- and fingernails would be really pleasured to be spoiled by a pro for the first time. It’s not like I don’t care about them at all but honestly, I really do think that there are more than enough parts of your body you have to look after so it’s not necessary to spend too much time on food- and fingernails, but if someone else would do if for me – that sounds pretty good! WALSH`S PHARMACY VOUCHER IS MAJOR PRIZE FOR ANY BUSINESS SUPPORTERS!

Take a tip from the people in the know – sign up and support Eastside Radio for great music all year long and some special prizes for Christmas!

We launched Eastside Live at 505 on Thursday the 13th of October with The Vampires performing a Vamp Session – featuring special guests Mike Rivett and Peter Farrah. This incredible ensemble wowed audiences both at 505 and those listening in live on Eastside Radio.

DJ Gordon Watson provided tunes between sets, with the lovely gents from 505 keeping guests very well fed and watered. The evening was a huge sucess with 505 providing the perfect venue for Eastside Radios monthly live music event, Eastside Live at 505.

The performance was live broadcast to all our Eastiside listeners out there, with some even popping in to the venue after hearing the gig on air!
