‘Culture How Could You’ by Alice Night is Eastside Radio’s album of the week.

An album that is full of freshness, unique sounds and Australian talent is the brand new release from Alice Night. With honest lyrics the Brisbane lady has stepped on her own specialty style of folk music, which she collaborates with electronic artists, classical composers and experimental sound makers.

Released on the 29th of April this year it is Night’s debut album, having released an EP in 2013 and another track late last year Night has really put a lot of heart into her first full studio album, with ten tracks we are brought on a journey of life and of course the main word of the album ‘Culture’ through music. Featuring on the album is APRA award winning composer Robert Davidson (Topology), who is head of composition at the University of Queensland, while producing the record is Liam Malby. Combining the beautiful tender vocals of Alice and using Davidson’s experience and talent it has made for a debut album that is going to go down a hit.

We all know what makes great music and that is passion and honesty, and of course talent, well Alice Night has all three. As an artist she has taken moments from life and situations that people find themselves in and put pen to paper to express her thoughts through music. Having wrote half the album in New York and finished it off putting the final touches to it when she arrived home, you can be sure that different elements and environments all came in to play.

When you listen to the album the tracks can feel quite deep but that is not saying that Night has brought this on with deep vocals, it is the arrangement, tone and use of words on the tracks that bring such a powerful meaning to them. By confronting the issues of social norms, body image, the innocence of childhood, and the role of the natural world in connecting us to who we are Night has produced some outstanding work. In todays mainstream music scene we are getting far too much of the same status quo and artist’s avoiding the topics that matter to us in life, it is a real breath of fresh air to have someone come along, express their opinions on these issues and at the same time do a very good job while doing it.

If you are looking for an album that is breaking down the boundaries of known genres this is it, by mixing classical music with folk, story telling and electronic sounds Alice Night has really produced something special. It is hard to define to just one genre only that it is a pleasure to listen to. If you want to escape from all the fuss, relax and just enjoy truthful lyrics with joyful sounds then you need to pick up this new release. After you have listened to her sounds you can be assured that next you will want the live experience and you can do exactly that as on the 21st of July Alice Night will be performing in Sydney as part of her album tour, for more details check out https://www.moshtix.com.au/v2/event/alice-night-feat-anatole-alphamama-queen-nardine/87691.
